A stable pH is essential for the
well-being of all aquarium inhabitants. Alkalinity measures the capacity of
seawater to absorb the acidic waste produced by fish, without affecting the pH.
Maintaining an alkalinity of 2.2 meq/l will prevent sudden fatal drops in pH.
Both pH and alkalinity should be tested regularly. Alkalinity level can be
adjusted by using a buffering solution.
Instructions:
ALKALINITY: clean test tube by rinsing it with the water to be tested. Fill the
test tube to the 10 ml. mark with water to tested. Add 5 drops of alkalinity
indicator. Close the test tube with the stopper and shake gently for 10 seconds.
Open the test tube. Look down through the open top of the test tube, while
holding it 8 inches (20 cm) above a white background. Read off the alkalinity
level next to the color that is most similar to the sample in the test tube.
Clean the test tube and stopper with tap water, PH: Clean test tube by rinsing
it with water to be tested. Fill the test tube to the 6 ml. mark with water to
be tested. Add 3 drops of pH (7.8-8.6) indicator, close the test tube with the
stopper and shake gently for 10 seconds. Compare the color with the color scale,
by holding the test tube in a vertical position, 8 inches (20 cm) from a white
background. Read off the pH value of the color that is most similar to the
sample in the test tube. Clean the test tube and stopper with tapwater.
Irritating to eyes. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty
of water and seek medical advice. Keep out of reach of children.
