Protein skimming is the physical process
of removing suspended or dissolved organic waste and invisible particles from
aquarium water. This material consists of protein fragments and other waste,
produced by the living organisms in the marine aquarium. Since these are
potentially harmful to the aquarium inhabitants, rapid removal is essential.
Protein Skimming also reduces the amount of floating bacteria, limits nitrate
and phosphate build up, and prevents the development of slime algae. The
advantage of Protein Skimming is the waste material is continuously removed,
separating it from the water flow. It is then collected into a foam cup, where
it is no longer in contact with the aquarium water.
When air is administered to the Berlin Air-Lift 60, Internal Protein Skimmer, a
continuous stream of fine air bubbles will rise into the inner tube. The air
bubbles also draw aquarium water into the skimmer (air-lift effect). The inner
tube opens into the outer tube holding the foam cup. In the first pass of the
air bubbles, from the air-stone up through the inner tube, foam will be formed
and pushed into the foam cup. The water will flow down the outer tube, drawing
with it a significant amount of air bubbles. The outer tube ends at the air
return skirt, forcing the air upwards, against the current, in the direction of
the foam cup. The water without air will flow back to the aquarium via the outer
tube and air return skirt. The Berlin Air-Lift 60, Internal Protein Skimmer is
suitable for aquariums up to 60 gallons.
The Berlin Air-Lift 60 features a limewood air-stone, separate water inlet and
water outlet. triple air pass, and a compact design that can be installed in an
aquarium, filter sump or filter compartment. The Air-Lift 60 can be disassembled
completely for easy cleaning. The air pump is not supplied.
Instructions:
The collection cup should be emptied and cleaned regularly. Also the upper part
of the outer tube should be cleaned after removal of the collection cup. Any
deposits of organic material in these places may prevent the forming of new
foam. The air stone should be replaced monthly to insure the maximum
performance. After replacement of the air stone the air supply may have to be
readjusted.
Specifications:
An air pump with an adjustable air flow is recommended.
