Reef Aquarium Buffers Marine reef buffers and carbonates adjust the alkalinity, hardness and/or pH of your water to match the unique levels of the reef, while boosting your water's buffering capacity (its ability to keep these levels stable despite changing conditions in your aquarium). This is crucial to all aquatic life, and reef pH is generally higher than your tap water. Use reef buffers and carbonates (including salt and reef sand) when setting up your aquarium, and use buffers anytime you do a water change - and monitor your hardness regularly.
